Weekend Whatever: About Books
I got the idea to do this from Kim's site: (Just like others who are doing this "meme", I am taking the Bible out of the equation here. Why? Because it would be the answer to 1 thru 5 and 8 if I didn't.)
1. One book that changed your life
Competent to Counsel by Jay Adams. Because I was a blame-shifter raised on going to counselors because my mother was a heavy drinker and left when I was 6 years old. I thought when I was young, it was all my fault that she left, but as I grew older I blamed her for everything... including my sinful habits and my abortion. Having grown up going to counselors that gave a very wordly blameshifting perspective on counseling, I found that the Lord used this book to teach me about true nouthetic life-changing counseling. It was a huge shift in my thinking.
Sin and Temptation from the works of John Owen, Introduction by J.I. Packer, Edited by James M. Houston. Because the Lord used this book to help me more fully comprehend my individual responsibilities and need for transformation in my actions and repentance of sin as well as the sufficiency of Christ.
(... it is actually very difficult for me to pick just one. I am already at 2 and there are more... so many more. I love to read. This is hard.)
2. One book that you’ve read more than once
Stepping Heavenward by Elizabeth Prentiss (so many more... ugh)
3. One book you’d want on a deserted island
The Worst-Case Scenario Survival Handbook by Joshua Piven and David Borgenicht or anything by Dr. Seuss because I'd probably go crazy anyway and Dr. Seuss would make me laugh.
4. One book that made you laugh
The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster (Go read my review of it HERE)
5. One book that made you cry
Stepping Heavenward by Elizabeth Prentiss
6. One book that you wish had been written
Ummm... a book that discusses disruption adoptions from a true Biblcal perspective by my friend Sheshe. :-)
7. One book that you wish had never been written
Yikes. There are WAY to many to list here. First off, just think about any book that came from a TBN heretic.
8. One book that you are currently reading
Why Does God Allow War by Martin Lloyd Jones
9. One book you’ve been meaning to read
Historical Theology by William Cunningham
*** SIDENOTE: This is called a "meme" and you are supposed to "tag" someone to do it. I kind of hope my pastor considers doing it... but he just got back from the youth camp this week with our church youth group. I think it would be quite interesting to read Challies answers to these questions considering all of the books he reads. I have just chosen 2 people that likely won't do it...

Wow, I hardly belong with this group of authors, Lisa! I do have to tell you that God has allowed us to see such pain in adoptive families recently that we have not seen before. Many prayers for wisdom will be made before we can proceed with that book. There is so much sin out there that we were not aware of. We are seeing issues with kids that would be horrid even coming from an adult - mostly violence and molestation. This is much, much more than "simply" attachment issues. Prayers appreciated as we seek the Lord's direction.

I love Stepping Heavenward! Even though she does make me feel so unworthy....

It was actually really odd for me to reveal the answers to this meme. It was like letting people I have never personally met into my heart and mind on an even deeper level than writing about my testimony.
I don't know why.
