Tuesday Tips: Bible and Book Studies
Since I wrote THIS post about Beth Moore's studies, I have received several e-mails asking me what studies I recommend. Here are a few:
1. Irving L. Jensen's Independent Bible Study, which is a how-to guide for doing one's own Bible study that can be found HERE. (not a canned Bible study guide)
2. For simple overviews of Bible passages, get Warren Wiersbe's "Be..." series HERE.
3. Twelve Extraordinary Women by John MacArthur is one of the best book studies out there. Girl Talk is doing a blogging book study on it right now.
4. I also really like Martha Peace books, such as The Excellent Wife (you can get the study guide HERE and the teacher's guide HERE). Becoming a Titus 2 Woman is another one of my Martha Peace favorites.
5. Feminine Appeal is "a book of instruction for wives and mothers that explores 7 virtues which are to mark a woman's life, found in Titus 2."
6. Women's Ministry in the Local Church is a book by Susan Hunt and Ligon Duncan. They "walk through the Scriptures to help readers better understand what it means to have an effective, biblical women’s ministry in the church."
7. For more Christian books for women go HERE. This link is one I trust, but I have not gone through all of the books listed there.
8. My pastor has also created study questions for A.W. Pink's Comfort for Christians and The Attributes of God, as well as J.C. Ryle's The Duties of Parents
9. HERE is another site that has a list of books for women. I have not gone through all of the books listed there. However, this is a site I regard highly.
Warren Wiersbe once wrote "Better to have fewer of the best books than to clutter your shelves with volumes that cannot serve you well."

All very good recommendations, especially on the Attributes of God--which is a great place to start and vital for building a strong foundation!
Keep on encouraging our sisters-in-X to long for the pure milk of the word and to become firmly established. Our families, homes and churches will be the richer for it!

I just ordered The Excellent Wife for myself.
I have read 12 Extraordinary Women. It was excellent.
The one by Susan Hunt sounds good.

Amen and thank you. I'm sure there are e-mails you're not sharing that have not, shall we say, been gracious in your critique of Beth Moore. There was a woman in my congregation who had been longing to do a Beth Moore video study for some time. I knew much of what you've written about and was concerned for the best way to help her realize there are so many other godly, biblical books/authors/speakers out there to use. This family has since left our church family. I don't know if this was THE reason, but I know it was one of the reasons. It is difficult when you long to stand for truth, for God's Word and it's absolute sufficiency over anything man/woman may come up with. I pray the Lord will grant you steadfast endurance to do just this: stand firm.

Connie,
To God be ALL the glory, my friend.
Kim,
"The Excellent Wife" is even better when you get the study guide to go with it. Good to hear from you.
Mr. Sorensen,
Yes, I have gotten "other" e-mails from die-hard Beth Moore fans.
You wrote: It is difficult when you long to stand for truth, for God's Word and it's absolute sufficiency over anything man/woman may come up with.
Amen. And thank you for your prayers.
God is faithful and just. May we all stand firm in His unfailing Truth and may we be His servants for His glory alone,
Lisa

I've read, and done the bible study that goes with it, of the Excellent Wife. It was one of the best studies I have ever done. I am now doing Martha's study, Becoming a Titus 2 Woman, which is also good.
I recently bought Feminine Appeal. I'm looking forward to reading that one too.
I went to the link you posted, and many of their books are good. They do sell one book that I would never, never recommend to anyone. They carry Debi Pearl's, Created to be His Helpmeet. I read that book, and am deeply concerned for those women who are reading it, or have read it. I won't go into why here, but I've got some good reasons.

Lynn,
I would be very interested in your concerns about the book you mentioned. I have not read it. Please consider e-mailing me at lisa4given@hotmail.com
Like I said, I have not read all of the books at that link and therefore cannot personally recommend them in one big lump. It is, however, a link I trust. The people that run Grace and Truth Books are close friends of mine. They are also very gracious people and would be sincerely interested in your concerns as well.
I appreciate your comment,
Lisa

Hey Lisa!
One of my all-time faves is "Lies Women Believe and the Truth That Sets Them Free" by Nancy Leigh DeMoss. There is also a workbook to go with it. Every woman I know who has read this has been very convicted and challenged and changed. Good for personal study, group study or one-on-one.
