*FLASH*
...is the name of our dog that has been missing since Christmas day. We have had him over 4 years, taught him sign language commands and he also had a bit of a sense of humour. He had this way about him that was sometimes frustrating, but mostly irresistable. We miss him and have all had our bout of crying over the dog. I think my oldest son, who did most of the dog-training and care-taking, has taken it the hardest. We have one of those "Home-Again ID" microchips in his shoulder and we have done everything we can think of to find him. He has never been gone this long and considering the below freezng temps and rain/ ice storm that hit after Christmas we are having nightmare about the worst possible scenerio. My 4 year old walks around pathetically saying, "Mommy, he's hungry. He has to eat." Which makes me want to cry... and my oldest son, Josh... his eyes get all watery.
Dogs are hard work. It is like having another child to take care of... but it was worth it with Flash. He was a beautiful silver Keeshond and it is not likely he is alive. He was adventurous, but he was the kind of dog that would do everything he could to make it back home.

I grew up with a dog we had for 13 years. Missy... a toy poodle. I loved that dog and it killed me to watch her become elderly... but it was still worth it to have her in my life.
Anyway... tomorrow morning a Bichon Frise 14 week old male puppy is coming to our home. No... he will not replace Flash, but we are all excited. And if Flash ever did make it home again, then he would have a buddy.
Here is a picture of him. My kids want to name him either Triton, Bruiser, Bruno or Tank. :-D

Oh, Lisa! I'm so, so sorry about Flash! He's beautiful! We have a keeshond/husky mix. They are great dogs...
And the Bichon Frise is one of the cutest little balls of fluff I've seen! He'll be a great comfort to all of you...

Sorry to hear about Flash--maybe he will show up, yet.
My Westie will be 12 years old this April, and I've had her since she was 12 weeks old. (I think you probably understand the significance of the fact that she'll be twelve this year. Hint--we got her four months into our marriage). She is beginning to show a few signs of possible hip problems; this breed is prone to dysplasia.
I still remember the day we brought the white ball of fur home--and how I had to raise her, almost like a child--so I get what you mean about the "almost like another child to raise." I crate-trained her in two weeks, even while working a FT time job, and to this day, she very rarely has an "accident." I'm wondering....will the housebreaking challenge be handled by your oldest?

This reminds me of a similar situation a friend of ours had recently. Their dear dog, a spaniel, was lost. Since she was such a delightful dog, I told her I believed if someone had picked her up it was because they really wanted her and cared for her. I wouldn't be surprised if it were the same with Flash. He is such a beautiful dog that maybe someone really wanted him. If so, they are bound to be taking care of him. Our friends story had a good ending and I hope yours does, too. A month or so later, they discovered that a family had found Lady, who had lost her tags, and taken very good care of her until they discovered the tags in their yard.
We also have a dear sweet Golden Retriever who is aging. She has meant a whole lot to us over the last nine years, as a counselor to our kids when they joined our family and a comforter to them each time they were sad. We will be very sad when she dies and I can hardly bear to think of that without crying.
I know you will enjoy the new little one, and if Flash turns back up he will, too!

Cute puppies, Maybe Flash is okay and will come home. Good luck with your new dog. It is a lot of work, one more thing I will get to admire you about. 6 kids, home schooling, training new dogs, anything you do not do?
