The Evolution of Words
I have been thinking about words lately. What they mean, how meanings evolve, how sometimes we do not know that they have evolved until we use them and someone slams us for using it wrongly. How we sometimes get fed up with a word because it has lost its meaning and appears to the point of no return. What about when people change its meaning to suit their own agenda? Or there seems to be so many interpretations of the same word or even phrases that you become discombobulated?
Health insurance line, "We have you covered" - except for your pre-existing condition."Your call is important to us," endlessly repeated while you're on hold for 20 minutes, then disconnected.
Mutatius Dictums -- changing words
Naughty used to mean "evil, useless, hostile"
today it has a seemingly less to-the-point definition... "mischievous or bad"Gay used to mean happy or joyful.
Today, the top definition refers to homosexuality.Hussy used to mean housewife.
Now it means slutty.
Linguistic Quirks
We drive on parkways and park on driveways... Why?
Here are some words I am especially pondering:
contextualization
regulative principle
truly reformed
fundamentalist
emerging
modesty
Evangelical
It seems that modesty to one person is so different to another. Actually, if I had 5 people defining each of the words above, it seems that I may end up with 5 definitions. Regardless of whether or not those 5 people were all from the same church, same background, same family, it still seems there will be a different emphasis on that same word. Why? Why do we have to make things so complicated?

My Husband, My brother in Christ

You're absolutely right. It seems that we all have to ask others to define their terms before we can even have a meaningful conversation...
And, yeah, "your call is important to us..." GRRRR.
